Gerrard's Cross is a small town towards the south of London represented by this statue of Gerrard with his shovel. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here. Seen in this piece is a statue commissioned in the 1980s to commemorate the “Unknown Navvy” – it stands for all the people, particularly men, who built the railways
